Planipedia is a collection of published and referenced information relating to financial planning. Planipedia is a new community wiki that functions in a similar way to Wikipedia. Financial planners anywhere in the world can search, add and edit various articles and documents that contribute to consolidated and reputable source of information. Worldwide the issue of "Best Practices" where clients are served consistently and effectively is of great concern. Going forward, Planipedia will feature a new Best Practices topic monthly. This month's focus is Letters of Engagement.
Letters of Engagement
Engagement agreements should be used for both comprehensive or modular plans. They also can, and should, be used regardless of whether compensation is taken on a fee only, fee-offset, or commission basis. An engagement agreement can take the form of “an agreement” or a “letter of engagement” outlining the terms of the engagement. In any case, the agreement or letter should include the following:
- The names of the parties to the engagement;
- A description of the services to be provided – the more detailed the better;
- The responsibilities and accountability of each party;
- How decisions will be made;
- The term of the agreement;

Australia Proposes Commission Ban by July 2012
The Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law the Hon Chris Bowen MP released a reform package (April 2010) for the future of financial advice as a result of the Ripoll Inquiry. Among other things, the Minister include is proposing a prospective ban on commissions and volume based payments by 1 July 2012, in relation to the distribution and advice of retail investment products including managed investments, superannuation and margin loans. This excludes life insurance products;
