Best Practice Principle: When doing planning, it’s is very easy to fall into a routine of focusing on several common aspects of our client’s situations and perhaps not going outside the routine on those less frequent occasions when we should do so.

To prevent this from happening, it’s a best practice to maintain a planning checklist that can be used as a memory jogger to ensure that you don’t miss items that are important to the client. It will be tempting to drop this practice once you have done it a few times, but the chances of overlooking issues will be much greater if you do not employ this practice on a consistent basis.

Here’s an example of a Financial Planning Checklist that addresses many of the problems and opportunities you’ll come across in your practice. Some of these will be common to many clients while others will be more rare.
