The Challenge

One of the biggest challenges for advisors who are interested in migrating to a fee based model is to determine how to fairly and consistently quote fees to clients. Too often there is a tendency to quote fees based on a client's "Fee Tolerance", meaning billing for services based on the comfort level of the client with the concept of paying fees. This can mean one client might pay a very low fee for the same services that another client pays a high fee, simply because one client is more open to fees than another. This of course is not an ideal approach to charging fees.

An Ideal Approach

The ideal approach to setting your fees is to identify each of the components of your service offering and then charge fees for each service depending on the complexity of the task. Here's a simple example.

One of your services might be to create a net worth statement for your client. You might use a software tool to assist with this or perhaps just a simple spreadsheet. Whatever your methodology to deliver this service, the key is to know how long it typically takes to do the job, and then also to know the hourly rate associated with the task. Some tasks might be performed primarily by yourself while others might be performed by your staff and thus you might have differing hourly rates depending on who performs the task.

Because the complexity of doing the same task can differ from one client to the next, you might have a "complexity" scale that identifies if the task is "simple", "average" or "complex". Then the time associated with the task can adjust to these degrees of complexity.

You also would want to have that quotation system default to a "typical" service offering so you always start with a pre-defined definition of services.
