Planipedia.org
The concept of www.Planipedia.org is simple. It is a community-based (unrestricted access), not-for-profit, open knowledge-base dedicated to financial planning principles. The fundamental concept that underlies “financial planning principles” is that the client’s interests must be placed first and foremost at all times – that advisors have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that the client’s interests are always placed first.
There are a variety of professional designations, associations, academic groups, regulatory bodies, professional firms and practitioners that are all working to increase the level of professionalism and consequently make available honest and competent advice for the consumer It must be clear that Planipedia is a true community based system is not restricted to any single country or designation. It is designed to be a platform for sharing knowledge, concepts and ideas for the betterment of the advisory community and consumers worldwide.
This is not about selling products, it is not about making advisors lots of money – this is about ensuring that the client’s interests are protected and that advice that is delivered is done so on an objective basis. That notwithstanding, we firmly believe and research has supported the fact that professional financial planners can indeed make more money as befits a professional – not a salesperson. We feel one way to accomplish this focus on professionalism is to have a global portal where financial advisors can share knowledge on how to do a better and more efficient job for their clients. As an example, content for a comprehensive Best Practices manual is underway which can be tailored for any country.
Some things your organization can consider to help in this initiative
- The value of the site will be driven by the value of the content in a general sense as well as specific to the country of the person visiting the site. If your organization already publishes content that could be of value, will you allow some of this content to be used on Planipedia.org? An attribution of the content will have links back to a Planipedia page on your organization and in turn to your own web site. (See The Engagement Process for an example.) It is important to remember that content on the site will not be copyright restricted and will be freely usable by anyone.
- There will be a general page on your organization in the Planipedia explaining to advisors your focus both geographically and otherwise. You are free to put whatever you want on this page (within the etiquette of the site), or if you do not have the resources to do this, in the least can we have permission to pull some of the content from your home page or “About Us” page to fill this in?
- You or your members may have new content that would be useful to students, educators, planners and consumers about other planning principles – either generally or specific to your country. We encourage you to make contributions.
- Aside from the value of the content, a community is built by having people use and add to the content. Any form of promotion of Planipedia to your members would be valuable.
- You can be listed as a sponsor of Planipedia – not money just a commitment to provide either content or promotion.
- You can put a general link to Planipedia in the resources section of your web site.
- You could highlight special articles in Planipedia (maybe even materials you have contributed) with specific links from your web site.
Planipedia.org is a not-for-profit group and we hope to have a group of at least 15 to 20 “founding sponsors” – groups that will help with either content or promotion/exposure. Groups will be welcome to join at any time, but this initial approach is to help generate a critical mass of initial content sponsors. PlanPlus will just be one of these sponsors and has volunteered to provide all technical services for hosting at no charge.
We realize that everyone’s time is valuable and many associations and firms are struggling with the recent crisis. At the same time there is no better time to demonstrate a commitment to the development of a professional financial planning community than today.
PlanPlus Planit – A community (free) planning tool
Along this line, PlanPlus will be offering a free community level version of our software which will provide a variety of capabilities. These resources are specifically targeted to financial advisors but we have no way of restricting from consumer access as well.

PlanPlus Planit is available in English, French, Spanish and Chinese with some additional languages in initial exploration. It is an open system so new languages can be added at any time.
PlanPlus Planit supports over 50 countries at launch with the basic currency, graduated taxation calculations, asset classes and more. The country of residence of the client drives the rules that are applied. More advanced localization is available in many countries like Canada, US, UK, China, Malaysia and so on.
PlanPlus Planit Professional Upgrades
Although there is tremendous value at the free community level, there are optional upgrades that planners will be able to consider:
- Branding options to allow advisors to brand and customize aspects of the solution
- Upgraded investment planning with additional analytics and data integration
- Integrated Morningstar data feeds (or other alternatives) for many countries
- FinaMetrica psychometric risk profiling
- Life Goals integrated planning for advisors holding forth as financial planners
We are also hoping over time that other customers and members of the community may contribute additional tools either freely to the community level or for sale where the value is warranted.
PlanPlus Planit for Students
There is a special variant of the PlanPlus Planit Community edition specifically for educators and students. This version is also free with the following benefits:
- Everything in the community edition
- A subset of the investment universe from Morningstar (where available) with only annual updates
- Full functionality of the planning tool at the professional level including FinaMetrica, advanced investment planning and Life Goals.
- Limited to 5 or fewer clients.
- A comprehensive student Workbook with exercises, sample cases, an instructors answer guide and more. This workbook as been included in Planipedia and has already been localized with specific exercise for Canada, UK, Malaysia and Singapore. It can be easily extended by any members of the community.
Summary
This initiative is designed to provide both knowledge and tools at no charge to financial advisors across borders, designations and languages. It is designed to assist professionals, those studying to become advisors or the consumer directly.
We are not looking for money – we are looking for organizations and individuals who are committed to raising the bar for the evolving profession of financial planning. As such we hope that you or your members can assist with contributing valuable content or indeed to freely take advantage of the content.
